Challenge

The goal was to design an engaging activity within the Archaeological Park of Cerveteri to bring young audiences closer to Etruscan culture. The main challenge was to transform the traditional museum experience, often seen as static, into an immersive and dynamic adventure.

Process

UX Research

  • Desk Research: Comparative analysis of competitors (Fotevikens, Bibracte, Carsulae) to identify key elements like storytelling, interactivity, education, and inclusivity.

  • Survey: 108 participants revealed that users prefer interactive and engaging experiences rather than passive visits.

  • On-Site Analysis: A site visit to the Necropolis of Banditaccia confirmed the accessibility and suitability of the Grande Tumulo II for the activity.

Concept Development

  • Creation of an Escape Room format tailored to a younger audience (15+ years).

  • Narrative design inspired by the Euphronios Krater, blending historical events with imaginative elements.

Design & Prototyping

  • Location: The Grande Tumulo II, divided into 4 tombs, each representing a game "room" with specific challenges.

  • App Design: An interactive app (Figma prototype) for remote booking and in-game support.

  • Gameplay: Participants use a kit containing narrative cards, tools, and interactive projections to solve puzzles.

Outcome

The final solution, "Escape from Etruria", is an educational and playful experience that turns the archaeological site into an interactive game. Players collaborate to solve challenges, gather clues, and “save the hero” Sarpedon while learning about Etruscan culture through:

  • 4 Thematic Escape Rooms: Save Your Hero, Find Your Soul, Echoes of Time, Lost in Time.

  • Technology Integration: An interactive app, immersive projections, and physical props.

  • Duration: 45-50 minutes for teams of 4-6 players.

Conclusion

"Escape from Etruria" redefines the museum experience by making it accessible, interactive, and youth-oriented. Combining historical storytelling, technology, and gameplay, the project fosters a deeper connection to Etruscan heritage, offering a fresh and engaging way to explore archaeological treasures.
